FARM AND RANCH MANAGERS heading into 2027 face a familiar problem with an added complication. Fertilizer, fuel, machinery, financing, labor, and other production inputs are expensive. At the same time, no one knows with certainty what many of those inputs will cost when they are actually needed. As of its September 3 forecast, USDA estimates total U.S. farm production expenses at $492.8 billion for 2026, up 4.5 percent from 2025. Fertilizer, lime, and soil conditioner expenses are forecast up 15.3 percent, while fuel and oil expenses are up 28.8 percent …
OVER THE LAST several decades, our team has attended conferences across the U.S. and internationally on farm management, applied economics, and animal production. The rapid advertising and adoption of precision livestock technologies has been one consistent trend that has stood out. These technologies include virtual fence, health monitoring, optimized feed delivery, inventory systems with many now advertising the incorporation of artificial intelligence …
LIVESTOCK AND FORAGE PRODUCERS have dealt with challenging production conditions throughout this decade. Multiple years of drought, water supply issues, and wildfires are just a few things causing many livestock producers to search for reliable feed resources amid large swings in forage prices. Recent rains have alleviated some of the 2026 drought pressures but, apart from the corn belt and northeast regions, much of the continental U.S. remains in some level of moderate to severe drought …
WILDFIRES BURNED MORE than a million acres across Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma in the first months of 2026. Nebraska lost over 800,000 acres; the Morrill Fire in mid-March burned more than 600,000 acres by itself. Then in June, the South Fork Fire burned nearly 40,000 acres in Dawes and Sioux counties near Fort Robinson Nebraska. The fire reached full containment on June 25 and producers made decisions about selling cows, weaning early, feeding hay, among a host of other decisions. Similarly, wildfires in Colorado have burned more than 235,000 acres, as of August 11th …
FOR MANY BEEF PRODUCERS, drought creates a difficult financial decision. AGRICULTURE IS ONE OF THE FEW major production sectors where the factory floor is largely exposed to weather, pests, disease, markets, and biological timing. Farmers and ranchers cannot always slow down, shut down, or redirect production when conditions change. A crop has to be planted before the weather is known. Livestock must be cared for regardless of market conditions. Labor, machinery, fuel, seed, feed, fertilizer, and management time are often committed long before the final value of production is known …
